Brown Panda Bear

Brown Panda bears are extremely rare. To my knowledge there have only ever been 5 recorded in history and they have been described as brown giant panda bears. The first brown panda was discovered in 1985.

I believe that brown giant panda bears are not a sub-species of the giant panda or a separate species but simply a genetic colour mutation. Who knows, if more are bred or found in the future they may be considered to be a separate species of panda altogether!

It appears that with the colouring of this panda that ‘black’ has been replaced by a ‘light brown’ colour. To see a picture of the 5th brown panda cub go to: http://www.peoplepets.com/news/cute/rare-brown-giant-panda-cub-discovered-in-china/1

So assuming that these brown panda bears are giant pandas we can say that their scientific name is Ailuropoda melanoleuca (same for the giant panda). Giant Pandas can reach a length of almost 6 feet. It is believed that all the brown giant panda bears to have been born have all come from black and white mothers. This is the indication that the brown colouring is simply a mutation or recessive gene and not a separate species.
